HISTORY + ORIGINS + FUN FACTS PARAGRAPH

“The Great Wave off Kanagawa” was created around 1830–1831 by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai as part of his famous series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. The print became globally influential after Japan opened trade with the West in the mid-1800s, inspiring Impressionist and Art Nouveau artists including Monet and Van Gogh.

The wave is often mistaken for a tsunami, but is actually believed to depict a powerful offshore rogue wave. The small fishing boats (oshiokuri-bune) highlight the relationship between nature’s force and human resilience — a theme that helped make this one of the most reproduced artworks in history.

Puzzle versions of fine art masterpieces surged in popularity during the early 21st century as people began displaying completed puzzles as framed wall art.
