Each side of this vintage Japanese studio pottery vase offers a different mood and palette — from sky-washed blue to fiery coral, from citrus-green spring dots to earthy speckled neutrals. The piece is both painterly and sculptural, embodying the Japanese wabi-sabi ideal of handcrafted variation.
Created circa 1980s in the style of Shōzan Kiln (正山窯), the square vessel features thick, tactile clay walls and a glossy black interior. The outer glaze combines the crystalline chemistry of Mayco Crystalites “Peacock Eyes” with hand-applied color splatter, producing blooming blue-green crystals on one face and spontaneous coral, yellow, and charcoal speckles on the others.
Perfect for collectors who love versatility — rotate it seasonally or display all four sides together for a dynamic art-pottery statement.
Japanese studio ceramics of the late 20th century blended folk craftsmanship with modern experimental glazes. “Peacock Eyes,” first popularized by Mayco in the 1970s, introduced crystalline inclusions that burst into color during firing — prized for their unpredictability. Shōzan Kiln potters embraced this expressive freedom, creating collectible vessels for export and galleries alike.
By the 1980s, such vases represented a bridge between art and utility, echoing global fascination with nature’s patterns inside clay.
