This matched pair of vintage decorative plates by Salem China Company offers a beautifully coordinated glimpse into Victorian fashion and feminine refinement, interpreted through the lens of mid-20th-century American decorative art. Sold together as a set, these plates feature illustrated scenes of Victorian ladies in full crinoline gowns, each framed by an ornate border of scrolling florals and lavish 23-karat gold detailing.

One plate is finished in a deep cobalt blue, the other in a rich burgundy red, creating a striking yet harmonious contrast that feels intentional and curated. The imagery is inspired by 19th-century fashion plates popularized by publications such as Godey’s Lady’s Book, which shaped ideals of style, leisure, and domestic elegance during the 1850s–1860s.

Produced during the 1940s–1950s, when historical revival décor flourished in American homes, these plates were designed specifically for display rather than dining. Together, they tell a cohesive story—ideal for symmetrical wall styling, a mantel arrangement, or as focal points within a Regency-inspired vignette.

Burgundy Red plate shows a small colored-in edge chip, carefully touched up by a previous owner and visible upon close inspection. This is fully disclosed and reflected in pricing; the overall display impact remains strong and elegant.

Founded in 1898, Salem China was known for producing high-quality ceramics that balanced durability with decorative appeal. In the mid-20th century, the company embraced Victorian and Regency revival themes, catering to collectors who loved historical romance without the fragility of true antiques.

Decorative plate pairs like this were often used to frame doorways, mirrors, or fireplaces—an echo of 19th-century symmetry and formality adapted for modern homes.
